At CGH Medical Center, we offer robust rehabilitation services so our patients can recover from illness and injuries. Occupational therapy plays a key role.

In our occupational therapy programs, you'll work with a professional and access targeted therapies that can help you handle all of your daily activities.

Who needs occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy can be vital for people dealing with shoulder, elbow, wrist or hand:

  • Stiffness
  • Weakness
  • Pain

Those are issues that can be caused by injuries and surgeries. They can also be caused by medical issues, including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, surgeries and arthritis.

Conditions:

  • Upper extremity joint pain, loss of range of motion/strength from injuries/arthritis
    (Joint replacement, crush injury, burns)
  • Upper extremity post-surgical care
    (Rotator cuff, carpal tunnel, amputations)
  • Upper extremity fractures/dislocations
    (Shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand)
  • Neurological impairments
(Stroke, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's, brain injury)

Some people access occupational therapy services in the hospital when they're recovering from a health issue. But others access occupational therapy on an outpatient basis when they're further along in recovery or are living with a chronic condition that doesn't require hospital treatment.

How occupational therapy helps

Our occupational therapists perform evaluations to determine how you're feeling now and what you need to accomplish in order to handle your daily tasks at work, home, school or play.

Occupational therapy treatments might involve:

  • Strength training
  • Training in the use of adaptive equipment (such as walkers or canes)
  • Cognitive training
  • Skill building

Your therapist might also use traditional physical therapy techniques, such as ultrasound, hot/cold therapy, electrical stimulation or splinting.
