CGH Medical Center announced that it has achieved 5-stars for its performance for Total Hip Replacements and Patient Experience from Healthgrades, the leading online resource helping consumers make informed decisions to find the right doctor, the right hospital for the right care. This achievement is part of new findings and data recently released by Healthgrades and is featured in the Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation. CGH also received several outstanding ratings from HCAHPS, the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems, which is the first national, standardized, publicly reported survey of patients' perspectives of hospital care, through medicare and medicaid.
CGH overall received HCAHPS scores in the top quartile in the state of Illinois for:
Overall rating of hospital 9-10; environment (cleanliness); overall pain management; communication about medicine; discharge information; nurses listen carefully and doctors listen carefully. The obstetrics and surgical units in particular also received many outstanding scores in various categories.
CGH Medical Center was just recently recognized for achieving Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™ for five years in a row (2012-2016) and as a Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Heart Failure (2016). The new report also rates CGH five stars for total hip replacement.
Every year, Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance at nearly 4,500 hospitals nationwide for 34 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions. A 5-star rating indicates that CGH Medical Center's clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.
"CGH Medical Center is committed to providing you with the very best care," said Dr. Paul Steinke, President and CEO of CGH Medical Center. “We are proud of these achievements and believe it is a direct result of the dedication our physicians, nurses and other members of the care team have to outstanding patient care.” The complete Healthgrades 2017 Report to the Nation and detailed study methodology, can be found at www.healthgrades.com/quality.
The focus of CGH Medical Center remains on delivering excellent care with kindness, compassion, and respect. This is accomplished through the combined efforts of our highly skilled and dedicated employees. CGH Medical Center is committed to improving the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
The new Healthgrades 2017 report demonstrates how clinical performance continues to differ dramatically between hospitals regionally and nationally. This variation in care has a significant impact on health outcomes. For example, from 2013-2015, if all hospitals as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving 5-stars as a group, on average 223,412 lives could potentially have been saved and 162,215 complications could potentially have been avoided. (Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of MedPAR data for years 2013 through 2015 and represent 3-year estimates for Medicare patients only.)
A 5-star rating indicates that CGH Medical Center's clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated.
For the 2017 Report to the Nation, Healthgrades compared hospitals with statistically better than expected performance (5-stars), as a group, to those with statistically worse than expected performance (1-star), as a group, and found that patients having a hip replacement in hospitals with 5-stars have, on average:
72.7 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals with 1-star.*
And from 2013-2015, patients having hip replacement in hospitals receiving 1-star are, on average: 3.7 times more likely to experience one or more complications than if they were treated in hospitals with 5-stars.*
"Hospitals that have achieved Healthgrades 5-stars have demonstrated a commitment to exceptional quality care for their patients," said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades. "In an environment where consumers have more choices about where to receive their care, a hospital's commitment to achieving a superior degree of quality for their patients is more important than ever."
