North Wing Addition

Many years in the making, the 66,000 square foot, state-of-the-art North Wing addition at CGH Medical Center opened its doors. The $24 million expansion "gave wing" to many advanced capabilities for our community. The project began in 2003 when the CGH Board of Directors directed Administration to prepare a 15-year Master Plan for the facility and grounds. Their challenge was to increase the area needed for patient care and create physician office space that would help recruit new physicians into the area. "Everyone realized we had outgrown the current facility and had little additional space to expand for new services," says Norm Deets, COO.

Chairman of the Board Bill Burke released a monarch butterfly during the rooftop ceremony at the grand opening which was held on May 1, 2008.

With the expansion complete, a public open house was held on Thursday, May 1, 2008 with nearly 1,000 community members attending. The open house included tours, refreshments, door prizes and a live butterfly release on top of the new helicopter pad. 52 monarch butterflies were released in memory of the late board member, Ron Smeltzer, and to symbolize not only CGH's past, but the flight and growth of their future for many years to come.

"We are so excited to unveil the North Wing addition to our community," says Ed Andersen, president and CEO of CGH Medical Center. "As CGH continues to offer new programs and expand current services to meet the health care needs of the community, we made sure that the design of the addition focused on the safety and security of CGH patients and guests, as well as adding family friendly amenities to enhance patient and visitor comfort."

This facility transformation produces important advancements: a new suite of surgical rooms built to accommodate diverse procedures; a new Critical Care Unit, Obstetrics Department and Birthing Center, all equipped with innovative technology, enhanced security, and private rooms; additional space for Diagnostic Imaging and Physician Services departments; a more secure and accessible helicopter pad - many changes, all with one objective in mind - to enhance the level and quality of our patient care.

The North Wing addition is a state-of-the-art facility that provides the latest services and best technology. Many issues were addressed in the planning stages, including: improving patient care by linking the addition to the Sterling Rock Falls Clinic; providing convenient staff and patient circulation; updating surgical rooms with a new suite of operating rooms; higher security with lock-down capability in critical units and OB; private rooms in the Critical Care and Surgical Units; and the need for a new helicopter landing area with improved access to the Emergency Department and Cardiac Care Center.

In addition to the North Wing expansion, 20,000 square feet in the current facility will be remodeled. Anticipated future healthcare needs were taken into consideration during planning, ensuring that this facility will not only benefit the needs of the community today, but for many years to come.
