CGH Medical Center's Cardiac Rehabilitation services are designed to provide cardiac patients with comprehensive care to help them recover faster and return to full and productive lives. Candidates for the Cardiac Rehab program include people who have had a cardiac event, such as heart attack, coronary bypass surgery, or angina (chest pain), or who have other significant risk factors.

Our Cardiac Rehabilitation team is composed of highly trained and skilled professionals who will work together with you, your family and your physician to help maintain or achieve an improved quality of life through recovery and reconditioning.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Services:

  • Exercise
  • Education
  • Counseling
  • Behavior Modification

Participants in the CGH Cardiac Rehab program exercise on a variety of equipment, including stationary bikes, treadmills, rowing machines, upper body ergometers, and free weights.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Phases:

  • Phase I begins in the hospital following a heart attack or a cardiac condition that requires close cardiac monitoring. Critical Care Nurses begin working with you to stimulate recovery and begin modifying your lifestyle. Focus is on education about specific heart conditions, cardiac risk factors and ways to reduce those risks. Low level activity and education is emphasized.
  • Phase II candidates are referred to the Cardiac Rehab program by their physicians. The average patient participates in cardiac rehabilitation one hour, three days a week. The exercise portion of the rehabilitation process in Phase II uses sophisticated heart monitoring equipment during each exercise session. Phase II focuses on individual exercise prescriptions. While the emphasis is on aerobic activity, it may also include muscle strengthening and flexibility. During Phase II, the Cardiac Rehab team also educates you about healthy lifestyle alternatives which help reduce your cardiac risk.
  • Phase III candidates can be referred by their personal physicians. Treatment plans are guided by patient goals, needs and capabilities. Patients will discover their strengths and deficiencies while adjusting their lifestyles for optimal health.
