Solving Shoulder Pain

Research has shown that patients whose surgeons perform a high volume of shoulder replacement procedures have shorter hospital stays, fewer complications and better outcomes. Dr. Michael DeFranco and the team of skilled CGH orthopedic surgeons and physical therapists have specialized shoulder training combined with extensive experience diagnosing, treating and rehabilitating a wide range of shoulder problems.

Dr. DeFranco has been honing his expertise for years, completing a fellowship in Shoulder Surgery at Harvard and working with the top shoulder surgeons in Europe, among other accomplishments. He is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is the only orthopaedic surgeon in the Sauk Valley area fellowship trained in both shoulder surgery and sports medicine.

Shoulder Surgery Technology

The goal of shoulder replacement is to improve range of motion and relieve pain by replacing the affected joint with a specially designed prosthesis that looks and functions like a healthy shoulder. The artificial joint can function without a rotator cuff, making it an especially good choice for patients who have suffered from a rotator cuff injury or deterioration due to arthritis. With the prosthetic in place, the joint moves smoothly and without pain.

Dr. DeFranco has been using the inverse shoulder replacement procedure since it was approved by the FDA, with excellent results for patients who want to live pain free and get back their quality of life.

CGH offers the following procedures for shoulder conditions:

  • Non-operative Care, including:
    • Care for Rotator Cuff Tears, Instability, Shoulder Stiffness, and Arthritis
  • Operative Care, including:
    • Arthroscopic and Open Shoulder Surgery
    • Surgery for Rotator Cuff Tears, Labral Tears and Shoulder Instability
    • Shoulder Replacement (Partial, Total, Reverse Shoulder Replacement)
  • And more!

Regis' Story

Regis Dahlstrom has a passion for woodworking.
But after years of struggling with shoulder pain, he had a difficult time enjoying it.

Regis sought help from the exceptional orthopedics team at CGH Medical Center. After carefully considering Regis’ previous medical history combined with a progressively worsening arthritis, Dr. DeFranco recommended a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. The procedure was a success, and now Regis is creating in his woodshop again and generally enjoying a pain-free life.
