CGH Surgeons Offer Expert Care
Did you know that you can get world-class surgical skills right here in the Sauk Valley area?  Meet four CGH Medical Center board certified general surgeons who provide top-notch care when you need it most.

  • Dr. Thomas McGlone

Thomas McGlone, M.D., is a general surgeon. He is one of only 50 surgeons to date who have received national certification in breast ultrasound, which lets doctors pinpoint tumors in the breast for biopsy. This technique has helped to all but end the need for invasive surgery in the diagnosis of abnormal breast tissue, Dr. McGlone said. Dr. McGlone received his medical degree at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Boulder, Colorado.

  • Dr. Mark Schmelzel

Mark Schmelzel, M.D., is a general and vascular surgeon. One of his specialties is peripheral vascular surgery correcting problems with blood vessels mainly in the arms, legs, and neck. Vascular surgery techniques can restore circulation and save patients from more serious problems such as stroke, Dr. Schmelzel said. Dr. Schmelzel received his medical degree at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois.

  • Dr. John Strom

John Strom, M.D., is a general and vascular surgeon. He recently received special training in endovascular surgery, which is less invasive than normal vascular surgery. Not all patients are candidates for it, but in certain cases, its helpful, he said. Dr. Strom received his medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He completed five years of surgical training in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and a six-month surgical residency at John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, England. He also completed his vascular surgical fellowship in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

  • Dr. David Powers

David Powers, M.D., is a general surgeon whose practice includes advanced laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny viewing scope inside the patients body. This lets doctors make shorter incisions. With this technique, Dr. Powers can treat serious problems like gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. About 93 to 95% of GERD patients will be cured at the time of surgery and will notice a difference as early as the next day, said Dr. Powers. He offers general surgical services, including upper and lower endoscopy, as well as a full range of breast care services, including ultrasounds and biopsies. He received his degree at Rush Medical College in Chicago.
