What is Accreditation? Accreditation is a voluntary process for assessment of sleep programs. The accreditation process is based on Standards established by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The AASM is a professional medical association representing practitioners of sleep medicine and sleep research, dedicated to the assurance of quality care for patients with sleep disorders, advancement of sleep research, and public and professional education.

Are you having trouble sleeping at night? Do you find yourself "nodding off" during work, or having trouble falling asleep at bedtime? Maybe your spouse experiences the same problems or suffers because of your sleeping problems.

If this sounds familiar, you could be one of nearly one million Illinoisans with untreated, undiagnosed sleep disorders that make it hard for you to sleep soundly at night - or stay awake during the day.

CGH Medical Center established the Sleep Disorders Center to help people overcome these sleep disorders.  Visit our Sleep Disorders page here.

The normal sleep cycle lasts about 90 minutes and is repeated four to six times a night. The cycle includes two very different kinds of sleep. When someone has a sleep disorder, the normal sleeping pattern is disturbed. But treatment is available to help restore restful sleep.

The CGH Sleep Disorders Center is an open lab. That means any area physician may schedule a patient through CGH's Central Scheduling Department at (815) 625-0400 ext. 5550 or may refer the patient to the Sterling Rock Falls Sleep Clinic at 815-625-4790 ext. 3301. Dr. David Bruce (left), and Dr. Kim Treviranus (right) have been specially trained in sleep disorders.

Patients of the Sleep Disorders Center usually arrive at the hospital around 9 p.m. and leave the next morning, usually around 7 a.m. A minimum of six hours of recording time is required. While you're at the sleep lab, a nocturnal polysomnogram will be done. It's a simple (and painless) procedure that will measure bodily functions during sleep. Brain waves, heartbeats, eye movements and muscle tension will be monitored along with leg movements, airflow breathing, chest and abdominal breathing and blood oxygen levels. Audio and visual monitoring is also used to determine movement, position changes and snoring. Learn more about Sleep Studies or Polysomnography here.
